On 8th september, 2025, not only Assam but the whole world commemorates the 100th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, affectionately known as the “Bard of the Brahmaputra.” This day achieves a milestone celebrating a century since the birth of the legendary voice which broke all boundaries and borders and touched hearts evenly throughout.
A Maestro Beyond Music
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s legacy has many levels. He was not only a brilliant singer and composer but also a poet, filmmaker, and a mighty hearted social activist. His compositions such as “Bistirna Parore” and “Manuhe Manuhor Babe,” are considered to be unsaid anthems of humanity which enlighten his deep empathy and dedication towards societal harmony. His work built bridges of linguistic and culture throughout the planet, earning him both national and international acclaim.
Grand tribute by Assam
As this year marks hundred years of the legend Sri Bhupen Hazarika being born, the centenary celebrations in Assam start with a grand event. The event is attended by more than 50,000 people to pay their homage to the legend. The crowd in unison recited Dr. Hazarika’s iconic poem which was kind of a special tribute to honour his work towards unity and community. The event also includes musical performances, cultural programs and exhibitions that embark upon Sri Hazarika’s reflect his work and impact on society. The Times of India
To embark upon the centenary celebrations and to honour the birth of this legend, our Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi iwill be attending the celebrations which are scheduled. To commemorate his memory Sri Narendra Modi will attend the inauguration ceremony of the year-long celebrations at the Veterinary Science college playground in Guwahati. The event is set to display performances by 1000 artists. To further honour the memory, a special biography will be released and also a commemorative coin will be featured. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s influence does not stop within the boundaries of our country India. The whole world honours and commemorates his legacy. An honorary tribute was paid to him even at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan which not only celebrated his contributions to art, music and culture but also his social awareness and the sense of community and unity. The World Expo event not only featured a heartfelt documentary and a cultural performance which was led by the well known artist Sri Ranjit Gogoi but also explicitly highlighted the rich and humane culture of Sri Bhupen Hazarika’s birth state, Assam.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s life and work are a pure testament to what is the power of art and culture in encouraging unity, integrity and power of community.
