With sunday, the 21st of september approaching, the world is getting ready for the fibal solar eclipse/ surya grahan of 2025. This eclipse is supposed to be a partial eclipse and will mostly be visible to the parts of southern hemisphere of earth. When the Moon passes or comes between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth and partially or completely obstructing the light of the sun a solar eclipse occurs. When only a portion of the Sun is covered by the Moon which results in a crescent-shaped appearance it is known as partial solar eclipse.
The eclipse which is going to take place on the 21st of september, 2025 is a partial solar eclipse. To be more specific this will be a deep partial eclipse where around eighty five percent of the surface of the sun will be obstructed by the moon.

Celestially and astrologically speaking, the surya grahan / solar eclipse will come under the sun sign of Virgo, which is a zodiac sign which is mostly affiliated to heath and spirituality. Mahalaya Amavasya, which is the last day of Pitru Paksh co incides with Surya Grahan this year. Mahalaya Amalaya is the last day or the final day of Pitru Paksha is the chapter dedicated to fulfilling and completing the Shradh/Shradhh rituals performed for our loved ones or our ancestors. But it has been calculated that this solar eclipse will not be visible in India and thus all the rituals coherent with Mahalaya Amavasya will be observed.
Who can see the Solar Eclipse or Surya Grahan and what are the timings
The eclipse can be seen majorly in the Southern Hemisphere which includes regions like Australia, New Zealand, some parts of Antarctica and many regions of Pacific islands. People residing in these areas and those interested in have a glimpse of the eclipse will be able to witness the partial eclipse where the moon comes and partially obstructs the sun which in turn creates a disc which is crescent in shape. At the max, at the time of peak eclipse around 85% of the Sun will be covered or obstructed by the Moon.
The eclipse will occur during nighttime in India and thus India will not be able to witness it. The time for the Surya Grahan is :
- Eclipse starting time: 10:59 PM IST(21 September)
- Eclipse ending time: 3:23 AM IST(22 September)
- At what time will the eclipse be at its maximum: 1:11 AM IST (22 September)
Will Sutak Kaal be applicable in India during Surya Grahan
As the solar eclipse is not going to be visible in India, thus this time there will be no Sutak kaal. Still many will observe the rituals which are generally observed during Sutak Kaal like keeping tulsi ka patta (holy basil), chanting mantras and not sleeping etc.
Viewing the Eclipse Safely
Though the Surya Grahan is not visible in India, but for those where the eclipse is visible it is advised not to look at the sun directly as it may cause serious eye issues as the strong rays may be harmful. Wearing proper eye protection like good sun glasses, eclipse glasses is advised. Looking at the eclipse through solar viewer will also help. Looking at the Sun without protection can cause serious eye damage.
